Since March 2011, a group for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people has met regularly at University of Fort Hare. Right now we are busy doing preparations to be able to register the group as a formal student society which could help us for example with funds and venues. According to our draft constitution the objectives of the society is to:

Right now we are busy doing preparations to be able to register the group as a formal student society which could help us for example with funds and venues. According to our draft constitution the objectives of the society is to:
- Offer support to students and staff who self-define as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans-gendered (LGBT) or are uncertain of or questioning their sexuality or gender identity; and all members who unite in the aim to promote sexual diversity on and off campus…
- provide opportunities for LGBT students to unite and socialize in a safe, liberating and unifying environment;
Provide information on LGBT-related issues to any students or other individuals who seek it; - represent the views of LGBT students to all relevant bodies;
- raise mutual awareness and understanding between LGBT students and other members of the University;
- To promote the equal treatment of and rights for LGBT people on and off campus,
organize an annual awareness week, create a sense of pride, openness and unity amongst members. - To emphasize a standard of equality.
- To promote unity on and off campus of all persons irrespective of race, gender, and sexual orientation.
- To break down stereotypes as to what LGBT persons are and should look like.
